Aerosol Feed Direct Methanol Fuel Cell

US Patent:
6440594, Aug 27, 2002
Filed:
Jun 16, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/595078
Inventors:
Andrew Kindler - San Marino CA
Sekharipuram R. Narayanan - Altadena CA
Thomas I. Valdez - Covina CA
Assignee:
California Institute of Technology - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
H01M 804
US Classification:
429 13, 429 30
Abstract:
Improvements to fuel cells include introduction of the fuel as an aerosol of liquid fuel droplets suspended in a gas. The particle size of the liquid fuel droplets may be controlled for optimal fuel cell performance by selection of different aerosol generators or by separating droplets based upon size using a particle size conditioner.

Power Generation In Fuel Cells Using Liquid Methanol And Hydrogen Peroxide

US Patent:
6485851, Nov 26, 2002
Filed:
Sep 23, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/160209
Inventors:
Sekharipuram R. Narayanan - Altadena CA
Thomas I. Valdez - Covina CA
William Chun - Los Angeles CA
Assignee:
California Institute of Technology - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
H01M 804
US Classification:
429 17, 429 19, 429 13, 429 39, 429 42
Abstract:
The invention is directed to an encapsulated fuel cell including a methanol source that feeds liquid methanol (CH OH) to an anode. The anode is electrical communication with a load that provides electrical power. The fuel cell also includes a hydrogen peroxide source that feeds liquid hydrogen peroxide (H O ) to the cathode. The cathode is also in communication with the electrical load. The anode and cathode are in contact with and separated by a proton-conducting polymer electrolyte membrane.

Reduced Size Fuel Cell For Portable Applications

US Patent:
6680139, Jan 20, 2004
Filed:
Jun 13, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/681833
Inventors:
Sekharipuram R. Narayanan - Arcadia CA
Thomas I. Valdez - Covina CA
Filiberto Clara - Prosser WA
Harvey A. Frank - Encino CA
Assignee:
California Institute of Technology - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
H01M 200
US Classification:
429 34, 429 32, 429 38, 429 39
Abstract:
A flat pack type fuel cell includes a plurality of membrane electrode assemblies. Each membrane electrode assembly is formed of an anode, an electrolyte, and an cathode with appropriate catalysts thereon. The anode is directly into contact with fuel via a wicking element. The fuel reservoir may extend along the same axis as the membrane electrode assemblies, so that fuel can be applied to each of the anodes. Each of the fuel cell elements is interconnected together to provide the voltage outputs in series.

Electrode And Interconnect For Miniature Fuel Cells Using Direct Methanol Feed
