City of Hayward, California
As a charter member of an LGBT (and/or questioning) youth group (Lambda), started in 1992 through Project Eden (Ken Athey - Founder), the members were encouraged to be visible leaders in the various communities of the San Francisco Bay Area adn Northern California. Ty was invited to speak at various universities, education leadership conferences, high schools, City Hall/community hearings and the California State Capital, on behalf of LGBT students seeking protection from bullying and persecution. The Bay Area city of Hayward honored Ty for his leadership and volunteer work in protecting future LGBT and questioning youth from unnecessary harm and abuse. He was also invited to return to his high school in 1994 after a particularly frank cover article in The Argus newspaper, discussing his negative experience as a student, to assist the district leadership in write new guidelines for the fair and safe treatment of LGBT youth, and delivering the new guidelines, in speeches and forums, to educators across the district from grades 5-12. The Lambda Youth Project was the first LGBT youth group in the US to plan and execute a Gay & Lesbian-centric public Prom, for youth 14-20. The "Gay Prom" became a national story in 1994, with Ty being featured in several news outlets, as a key planner of the event.
