Bottle Leak Tester

US Patent:
4184362, Jan 22, 1980
Filed:
Jul 24, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/927432
Inventors:
Wendell E. Standley - Lake Forest IL
Edward M. Naureckas - Libertyville Township, Lake County IL
Assignee:
Abbott Laboratories - North Chicago IL
International Classification:
G01M 320
US Classification:
73 407
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for detecting leaks at a fast rate in plastic bottles or similar containers wherein the bottles are secured in a multiplicity of open pocket members and arranged in a plurality of rows on a rotatable turret. A detecting gas is introduced into the bottles and they are subsequently moved to a detecting station where a detection means in the form of a mass spectrometer is activated by any gas leaking from the bottles. In a preferred manner, air is utilized to effect a sweeping action over the bottle exterior to move the detecting gas in the direction of the mass spectrometer. Air is also utilized to purge detecting gas from the pockets and air with vacuum to purge the bottles so that a rapid detecting system can be effected. The preferred gas used as the detecting media is helium and the bottles described are of the semirigid, plastic type which are used to contain sterile liquids. Such bottles can have holes small enough so the liquid will not leak out, but large enough to admit bacteria or other contaminates which would thus make the solutions nonsterile.

Spin Welding Apparatus

US Patent:
4075820, Feb 28, 1978
Filed:
Jul 28, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/709362
Inventors:
Wendell Evert Standley - Lake Forest IL
Assignee:
Abbott Laboratories - North Chicago IL
International Classification:
B65B 728
B67B 308
B29C 2708
B23K 2800
US Classification:
53329
Abstract:
A spin or friction welding apparatus which can accurately locate a container such as a semirigid plastic bottle with respect to an overcap which is to be frictionally welded to the bottle by means of a rotatable spindle member. In order to assure that the overcap is secured to the bottle neck when employing high production machinery utilizing a rotating spindle mechanism for frictionally engaging the cap on a stationary bottle, many tolerances must be compensated for in the dimensions of the cap, the size of the neck on the container, as well as the positioning of the cap in relation to the container. To compensate for these variables, a biasing means is provided in conjunction with the rotatable spindle member so as to effect a predetermined tension on the cap member when it engages the stationary container neck and is spun into frictional engagement with it. Further, means are provided in the form of oppositely disposed jaw members with surfaces to surround the neck of the container and position it precisely in axial alignment with the rotatable member. To further assure proper alignment during frictional engagement of the cap and the container neck, the support means for the container is moved out of position so that the only vertical support of the bottle is by means of these jaw members which contact the lower surface of the rib on the container neck.

Nozzle Member For A Container Washing Apparatus

US Patent:
4099674, Jul 11, 1978
Filed:
May 26, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/800777
Inventors:
Wendell Evert Standley - Lake Forest IL
Assignee:
Abbott Laboratories - North Chicago IL
International Classification:
A47L 1500
B05B 700
B67C 100
US Classification:
239431
Abstract:
A nozzle member for an automatic washing apparatus for containers which nozzles are capable of washing containers in a fast and efficient manner. The containers for which this particular nozzle is fabricated are of the semirigid type and are composed of a plastic material. They are elongated in configuration and are intended to contain sterile liquids. The nozzle is fabricated to enter the plastic container and thoroughly wash it with a mixture of detergent, water, and air. This is a continuation, of application Ser. No. 660,587 filed Feb. 23, 1976, now abandoned.

Washing Apparatus For Containers

US Patent:
4125120, Nov 14, 1978
Filed:
May 26, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/800779
Inventors:
Wendell E. Standley - Lake Forest IL
Assignee:
Abbott Laboratories - North Chicago IL
International Classification:
B08B 302
B08B 908
US Classification:
134126
Abstract:
An automatic washing apparatus for containers which is capable of automatically and continuously washing a multiplicity of containers in a fast and efficient manner. The containers for which this particular washing apparatus is fabricated are of a semirigid type. They are composed of a plastic material and are elongated in configuration. The containers are intended to contain sterile liquids. The novel washing apparatus has a specially fabricated nozzle which can enter the plastic container and thoroughly wash it with a mixture of detergent, water and air. Suitable means are afforded to hold the semirigid containers in a stationary manner as well as to position them over a series of nozzles.
