Oct 29, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/926890
Inventors:
David L. Moss - Austin TX, US
Paul T. Artman - Austin TX, US
William Coxe - Round Rock TX, US
Shawn P. Hoss - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
H05K 7/20
H05K 5/00
G06F 1/20
US Classification:
36167949, 36167948, 36167951, 361690, 361694, 361695, 3122232, 312236, 454184
Abstract:
A chassis having a bypass channel for air flow is disclosed. The chassis include a bypass channel that is proximate one side of the chassis. The bypass channel may be formed by the side of the chassis and a module of the computing system, such as the processor module of the computing system. A second module exists in the rear of the chassis. A physical barrier may be used to direct air from the bypass channel to the second module, which may be an I/O module. A plenum is placed on the opposite side of I/O module from the air flow. The presence of the plenum creates a negative pressure on the opposite side of the second module, causing air to cross the second module into the plenum. A fan in the rear of the chassis causes air to leave the plenum and exit the chassis.

System And Method For Safe Handling Of Information Resources By Monitoring Thermal Properties And Controlling Operation Of A Cooling Fan

US Patent:
8350711, Jan 8, 2013
Filed:
Oct 19, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/581636
Inventors:
Stuart Allen Berke - Austin TX, US
Dominick Lovicott - Round Rock TX, US
Hasnain Shabbir - Round Rock TX, US
William Coxe - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G08B 21/00
US Classification:
340584, 340635, 353 57, 352202
Abstract:
Systems and methods for safe handling of information handling resources are provided. In some embodiments, a method is provided. The method may include detecting occurrence of a power down sequence and in response to detecting of the power down sequence, controlling operation of a cooling fan coupled to information handling resources based at least on a first criteria of a predetermined policy. The method may include receiving a signal from a sensor, the signal indicating a thermal property of a particular information handling resource coupled to the sensor. The method may include determining if the thermal property satisfies a second criteria of the predetermined policy, the second criteria comprising a safe temperature range for handling the particular information handling resource. If the thermal property meets the second criteria, the method may provide an alert via an indicator to a user indicating the particular information handling resource is safe for handling.

Heat Sink With Vertical Air Flow Panels

US Patent:
2007015, Jul 12, 2007
Filed:
Jan 12, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/330584
Inventors:
Paul Artman - Austin TX, US
William Coxe - Round Rock TX, US
Robert Riegler - Austin TX, US
Eric Tunks - Round Rock TX, US
International Classification:
H05K 7/20
US Classification:
361695000
Abstract:
A heat sink is disclosed that includes a set of horizontal fins that are coupled to multiple solid vertical panels. A fan is located near the heat sink to direct air across the surface of the horizontal fins. Vertical panels may be located on the opposite ends of the heat sink to prevent air from exiting from the heat sink in a direction that is perpendicular to the axis of the fan. The presence of the vertical panels within the interior of the heat sink is advantageous because the vertical panels direct the forced air from the fan so that the air flows through the fan in the direction of the axis of the fan.

Fan Housing Apparatus

US Patent:
2008010, May 1, 2008
Filed:
Oct 25, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/552798
Inventors:
Anthony Sanchez - Round Rock TX, US
William K. Coxe - Round Rock TX, US
Raymond DeWine Heistand - Round Rock TX, US
Assignee:
DELL PRODUCTS L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
H05K 7/20
US Classification:
361695
Abstract:
A fan housing apparatus includes a shroud defining an air passageway. A housing member is located adjacent the air passageway and moveably coupled to the shroud such that the housing member is moveable relative to the shroud between an operating position and a service position. A fan housing is defined by the housing member, whereby the fan housing is inaccessible when the housing member is in the operating position and the fan housing is accessible when the housing member is in the service position. The shroud and housing member may be coupled to an information handling system chassis and adjacent a heat producing component. A fan may then be positioned in the fan housing when the housing member is in the service position. The housing member is then moved to the operating position and the fan is operated in order to cool the heat producing component.

Liquid Cooled Chassis

US Patent:
2019016, May 30, 2019
Filed:
Nov 28, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/825010
Inventors:
- ROUND ROCK TX, US
WILLIAM K. COXE - ROUND ROCK TX, US
International Classification:
H05K 7/20
H05K 7/14
Abstract:
An information handling system (IHS) includes a node enclosure containing one or more heat-generating functional components. A cold plate is attached to an inner surface of the node enclosure. The cold plate presents a conduction surface to a selected at least one of the one or more heat-generating functional components. A spring is positioned between the inner surface of the node enclosure and the cold plate. The spring positions the conduction surface into conductive proximity with the selected at least one of the one or more heat-generating functional components.

Systems And Methods For Thermal Throttling Via Processor Core Count Reduction And Thermal Load Line Shift

US Patent:
2019000, Jan 3, 2019
Filed:
Jun 30, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/638812
Inventors:
- Round Rock TX, US
William K. COXE - Round Rock TX, US
Robert B. CURTIS - Georgetown TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 1/20
G06F 1/32
Abstract:
An information handling system may include a processor having a plurality of cores integrated within an integrated circuit package and a thermal controller communicatively coupled to the processor and configured to, responsive to absence of a condition for operating the processor with a reduced core count, control the processor in accordance with a standard thermal profile defining a maximum operating temperature of the processor as a function of power consumed by the processor, and responsive to presence of the condition for operating the processor with the reduced core count, control the processor in accordance with a modified thermal profile defining a modified maximum operating temperature of the processor as a function of power consumed by the processor, wherein for a given power consumption of the processor, the modified thermal profile defines a modified maximum temperature that is greater than the maximum operating temperature defined by the standard thermal profile.

System And Method Of Controlling An Air Mover

US Patent:
2018007, Mar 15, 2018
Filed:
Nov 15, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/814021
Inventors:
- Round Rock TX, US
William K. Coxe - Round Rock TX, US
International Classification:
H05K 7/20
G06F 1/20
Abstract:
A system and method of controlling a cooling fan in an information handling system is disclosed. A fan request signal is received from a component of an information handling system and a determination is made regarding whether the component is configured to operate with a cooling fan. If the component is configured to operate with the cooling fan, the fan request signal is transmitted to the cooling fan. If, on the other hand, the component is not configured to operate with the cooling fan, a revised fan request signal is generated and transmitted to the cooling fan.
