Controlled Transfer Of Information In Computer Networks

US Patent:
7124092, Oct 17, 2006
Filed:
Jul 3, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/897407
Inventors:
David K. Gifford - Weston MA, US
Assignee:
Soverain Software LLC - Chicago IL
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
US Classification:
705 14
Abstract:
The present invention relates to techniques for controlling transfers of information in computer networks. One technique involves transmitting from a server computer to a client computer a document containing a channel object corresponding to a communication service, and storing an access ticket that indicates that a user of the client computer permits the information source computer to communicate with the user over a specified channel. Another technique involves transmitting smart digital offers based on information such as coupons and purchasing histories stored at the computer receiving the offer. Another technique involves transmitting from a server computer to a client computer a request for a user's personal profile information, and activating a client avatar that compares the request for personal profile information with a security profile of the user limiting access to personal profile information. Another technique involves transmitting from a server computer to a client computer a document containing an embedded link, activating the embedded link at the client computer and recording activation of the embedded link in a metering log.

Replica Routing

US Patent:
7149771, Dec 12, 2006
Filed:
Dec 28, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/472964
Inventors:
David K. Gifford - Weston MA, US
Assignee:
Cisco Technology, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G06F 15/13
US Classification:
709203, 709226, 709235, 709240
Abstract:

The replica chosen by replica routing is the replica that is expected to provide the best performance to the client based upon the client's location in the internetwork topology and the estimated performance of the internetwork. In addition, the system and method is designed to permit new replicas to be flexibly added without undue administrative overhead.

Digital Active Advertising

US Patent:
2010005, Mar 4, 2010
Filed:
Nov 11, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/616440
Inventors:
David K. Gifford - Weston MA, US
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
G06Q 20/00
US Classification:
705 1449, 705 1473
Abstract:
A complete system for the purchasing of goods or information over a computer network is presented. Merchant computers on the network maintain databases of digital advertisements that are accessed by buyer computers. In response to user inquiries, buyer computers retrieve and display digital advertisements from merchant computers. A digital advertisement can further include a program that is interpreted by a buyer's computer. The buyer computers include a means for a user to purchase the product described by a digital advertisement. If a user has not specified a means of payment at the time of purchase, it can be requested after a purchase transaction is initiated. A network payment system performs payment order authorization in a network with untrusted switching, transmission, and host components. Payment orders are backed by accounts in an external financial system network, and the payment system obtains account authorizations from this external network in real-time. Payment orders are signed with authenticators that can be based on any combination of a secret function of the payment order parameters, a single-use transaction identifier, or a specified network address.

Parallel Processing System With Processor Array Having Memory System Included In System Memory

US Patent:
4873626, Oct 10, 1989
Filed:
Dec 17, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/943314
Inventors:
David K. Gifford - Cambridge MA
Assignee:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
G06F 700
US Classification:
364200
Abstract:
A highly-parallel processing system in which a number of processing elements are interconnected by a network, and are also connected to a system bus and are controlled by a central processing unit. Each processing element includes a memory, and all of the memories in the processing elements form at least part of the memory available to the CPU. The processing elements normally execute programs in MIMD mode, and the CPU or another unit can interrupt them to execute a SIMD instruction. The network allows for transmission of variable length messages and also for combining messages when received at a common processing element.
