Method And Apparatus For Enhancing The Quality Of Service Of A Wireless Communication

US Patent:
6885638, Apr 26, 2005
Filed:
Jun 13, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/170982
Inventors:
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
John M. Harris - Chicago IL, US
Irfan Ali - Northbrook IL, US
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G01R031/08
G06F011/00
G08C015/00
H04J001/16
H04J003/14
US Classification:
370230, 370235, 370412
Abstract:
A communication system and method assigns, such as by marking headers of wireless communication packets, packet classification data to packets to define at least one of the following classes: a control signaling class, such as in-band signaling and control packets, a voice class, a data retransmission class, OAMP class and a data class and wherein each class represents a different transmission priority over a backhaul link. For wireless communication packets associated with the control signaling class and the voice class, the method and apparatus assigns each of the wireless communication packets with additional drop precedent data wherein the drop precedence data defines a further packet drop priority within the control signaling class and the voice class. The apparatus and method drops a queued classified wireless communication packet based on a priority level of assigned drop precedent data and based on the packet classification data.

Method And Apparatus For Serially Establishing A Group Call Session

US Patent:
7469149, Dec 23, 2008
Filed:
Jun 3, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/144903
Inventors:
John M. Harris - Chicago IL, US
Sean S. Kelley - Barrington IL, US
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04Q 7/20
US Classification:
455519, 455518, 455500, 455416, 455445, 4554221, 709202, 709203, 709204, 709216, 709218
Abstract:
Various embodiments are described for establishing a group call session serially. After receiving a serial group call request from a remote unit (), fixed network equipment (FNE) () selects a first subset of members () from the targeted group () of units and signals those members to join the group call session. Various techniques for selecting the first subset may be employed depending on what system benefits are desired. A second subset of members () from the targeted group of units is also selected and signaled to join the session. This second subset may be used to invite additional units in order to achieve a maximum number of group participants. Alternatively, the second subset may be used to invite a different unit (or units) to participate. This can be triggered by a user request to invite another subset to the group session, as could occur when the user is not able to resolve the particular matter at-hand with the group members of the first subset.

Increasing Scheduling Request Efficiency In A Wireless Communication System

US Patent:
8331394, Dec 11, 2012
Filed:
Dec 20, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/972716
Inventors:
John M. Harris - Glenview IL, US
William N. Shores - Phoenix AZ, US
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
Assignee:
Motorola Mobility LLC - Libertyville IL
International Classification:
H04J 4/00
US Classification:
370436
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for increasing Scheduling Request efficiency in a wireless communication system includes a step of configuring periodic timing opportunities for sending the scheduling request. A next step includes detecting new data arriving in an empty queue to trigger a scheduling request. A next step includes sending a scheduling request at selected SR opportunities until a response to the scheduling request is generated.

Method And Apparatus For Altering A Media Activity

US Patent:
2007004, Mar 1, 2007
Filed:
Aug 29, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/214259
Inventors:
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
John Harris - Chicago IL, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/66
US Classification:
370352000
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for altering a media activity are disclosed. The provision () of a dynamic media activity to a recipient user is enhanced by the dynamic acquisition () of information regarding an ambient condition of the user's environment and the use () of the information to dynamically alter the media activity in a manner that correlates with the information. An apparatus () embodying the method comprises a dynamic media activity engine () operably linked to a memory () having information regarding at least one ambient condition of the user and to a user interface (). Information regarding ambient conditions may be obtained by an ambient condition detector () linked to the memory () or by means of a wireless interface ().

System And Method For Improving Player Experience In Wireless Gaming

US Patent:
2007006, Mar 22, 2007

Inventors:
John Harris - Chicago IL, US
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
International Classification:
A63F 9/24
US Classification:
463039000
Abstract:
The present invention discloses a method and system for managing an interactivity of a game in at least one wireless communication device, by monitoring () at least one predetermined resource parameter associated with the wireless communication device, executing () at least one alternate scenario on at least one predetermined location within the game based on the predetermined resource parameter and changing dynamically () the interactivity of the wireless communication device with one of a wireless gaming server and at least one other wireless communication device by executing the alternate scenario.

System And Method For Improving The Capacity Of A Network

US Patent:
2007009, Apr 26, 2007
Filed:
Oct 20, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/254267
Inventors:
John Harris - Chicago IL, US
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
International Classification:
H04J 3/22
US Classification:
370468000
Abstract:
At lease one operating condition associated with an end user () of a network is obtained. Based upon the operating condition, a high bit-rate media feed being made to the end user () is halted. Thereafter, a lower bit rate media feed may be supplied to the end user in place of the high bit-rate media feed.

System And Method For Reducing Latency Using A Sample Channel

US Patent:
2009016, Jun 25, 2009
Filed:
Dec 21, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/963168
Inventors:
John Harris - Glenview IL, US
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
Assignee:
MOTOROLA, INC. - SCHAUMBURG IL
International Classification:
H04N 7/173
US Classification:
725 87
Abstract:
A system and method reduce latency involved in delivery of content to a handheld device. A sample channel comprises a plurality of content segments. Each content segment comprises recent content from one channel of a plurality of channels available for request by a subscriber. The sample channel is received by a handheld device and is not requested by the subscriber. The plurality of content segments are stored in a memory associated with the device. Upon detecting a request from the subscriber to view a specified channel, the content segment corresponding to the specified channel is located in memory and displayed on the device. A request is made for subsequent content from the specified channel, the subsequent content starting at or before the end of the content segment. Playback of the subsequent content is then initiated such that the subsequent content starts at a time when the content segment ends.

Method And Apparatus For Dynamically Changing The Signaling Format Of Messaging Control Information

US Patent:
2009016, Jul 2, 2009
Filed:
Oct 10, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/248946
Inventors:
John M. Harris - Glenview IL, US
Hua Xu - Lake Zurich IL, US
Xiao Xu - Palatine IL, US
Assignee:
MOTOROLA, INC. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04J 3/22
US Classification:
370471
Abstract:
For a packet, a communication device determines () a length of a packet length field based on one or more of the following: a size of a transmit region allocated for a remote unit, a size of a transmit region allocated for a remote unit and not to be used for at least one other packet, and/or whether the packet length of the packet is indicated by a history of packet lengths of previously transmitted packets. The communication device may also or alternatively determine () a length of a connection identifier field based on a number of connection identifiers previously established. The communication device then transmits () the packet, which includes the field(s) of determined length. By determining the lengths of these fields in this manner, the fields may be made shorter and their use may potentially reduce signaling overhead as compared to using the present-day fixed-length fields.
