An apparatus for controlling telephone communications through a communication switch during intervals of call traffic volume in excess of a threshold call traffic volume includes: (a) a call traffic volume sensing device coupled with the communication switch and measuring the call traffic volume during selected intervals; and (b) a call traffic control device coupled with at least one of the communication switch and the call traffic volume sensing device. In a packet switch for communicating packet switched data to and from a plurality of wireless mobile stations, a method and apparatus for automatically releasing resources tied up for communicating with dormant mobile stations. If the station has been dormant for a sufficiently long time, an alerting message is sent to the user of that mobile station. The user can then respond by requesting a release of the packet switched data (PSD) call currently connected to that mobile station or can request that the connection remain up. Advantageously, if the user of the station does not respond, then following a timeout the PSD call is released and the resources required for keeping the dormant call in existence are made available for new calls.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a method to a wireless station in a wireless communication system. A Mobile Switching Center (MSC) receives a call request for the wireless station. If the MSC determines that the called wireless station is engaged in an existing data call, the MSC alerts the wireless station of the call request while the called station is involved in the existing data call. A user of the mobile station determines if they would like to accept, reject, or forward the call request. The response of the called mobile station is sent to the MSC, which processes the new call request in accordance with the response from the called mobile station. If the called mobile station accepts the call request, the existing data call is placed on hold while the new call is completed.
