Apparatus For Multimodal Plane Wave Ultrasound Imaging

US Patent:
6971991, Dec 6, 2005
Filed:
Mar 7, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/382866
Inventors:
Robert S. Lasser - Washington DC, US
Marvin E. Lasser - Potomac MD, US
John W. Gurney - Great Falls VA, US
Assignee:
Imperium, Inc. - Silver Spring MD
International Classification:
A61B008/00
US Classification:
600437
Abstract:
An ultrasonic imaging apparatus combined with an x-ray imaging apparatus and/or an additional ultrasonic imaging apparatus performs ultrasonic sonography and/or x-ray imaging or multiple ultrasonic sonography to produce imagery that are spatially correlated. A holding means holds an object to be imaged in compression in an examination area. The x-ray source and the ultrasonic source are each relocatable from an inactive imaging position to an inactive non-imaging position. The x-ray image and ultrasonic sonography image are both taken in transmission and the resulting images contain a registry object to assist a user in spatially correlating the images. The speckle contained in the sonography image is reduced allowing for higher resolution of abnormalities in the tissue and improved concurrent biopsy procedures.

Multiangle Ultrasound Imager

US Patent:
7370534, May 13, 2008
Filed:
Mar 24, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/087854
Inventors:
Robert S. Lasser - Washington DC, US
Marvin E. Lasser - Potomac MD, US
John W. Gurney - Great Falls VA, US
Assignee:
Imperium, Inc. - Silver Spring MD
International Classification:
G01N 29/06
G01N 29/26
G01N 29/27
US Classification:
73602, 73620, 73621, 73625
Abstract:
Systems and methods to obtain an ultrasonic image of a large detection area are disclosed. A system includes a source of ultrasound generating ultrasonic energy and projecting the ultrasonic energy from a projecting end and an adapter interfaced to the projecting end and ultrasonically coupling the source of ultrasound to a first surface of the structure to be imaged at an adjustable angle of incidence. A method includes ultrasonically coupling a source of ultrasonic energy to a first surface of a structure to be imaged with an adapter, the adapter adjustable to a select a first angle of incidence and a second angle of incidence, projecting ultrasonic energy into the structure, and detecting a reflected acoustic energy from the structure with an ultrasound camera. A first angle of incidence is selected to introduce a longitudinal wave into the structure, and a second angle of incidence is selected to introduce a shear wave into the structure.

Reflector Latching Mechanism For Segmented Reflectors Used In Satellite Communication Systems

US Patent:
2010032, Dec 30, 2010
Filed:
Jun 23, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/821244
Inventors:
Michael A. Proffitt - Burnsville NC, US
John W. Gurney - Great Falls VA, US
Assignee:
AVL TECHNOLOGIES, INC. - Asheville NC
International Classification:
H01Q 15/20
US Classification:
343915
Abstract:
There is provided an antenna reflector including at least first and second reflector segments, each having first and second sides. The first and second reflector segments being configured to be connected together wherein the first sides of the first and second reflector segments define a substantially continuous surface of an antenna reflector. A first latch member is attached to the second side of the first reflector segment and a second latch member is attached to the second side of the second reflector segment. Each latch member includes an abutting surface which contacts one another when the first and second reflector segments are connected together. At least one protrusion extends from the abutting surface of the first latch member. There is at least one recess in the abutting surface of the second latch member. The protrusion is received in the recess when the respective abutting surfaces contact one another.

Photofluidic Audio Receiver

US Patent:
4689827, Aug 25, 1987
Filed:
Oct 4, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/784145
Inventors:
John O. Gurney - Kensington MD
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army - Washington DC
International Classification:
H04B 900
US Classification:
455614
Abstract:
A photofliudic audio receiver for producing sound directly from light modulated at audio frequencies and amplifying the sound to deliver uniform frequency response over a wide audio frequency range, utilizing only fluidic and thermal devices. It includes a photoacoustic cell for converting the modulated light signal to an acoustic signal, and at least one laminar proportional amplifier (LPA) for amplifying the acoustic signal to provide the sound output of the receiver. Each LPA has a rising frequency response over the wide audio frequency range, to thus offset the inherent falling frequency response of the photoacoustic cell. The receiver may have several amplifying stages, each stage including several LPA's connected in parallel. The receiver may also include acoustic highpass filters connected in series with the LPA inputs or outputs to accentuate the rising frequency response of the LPA's. The sound output of the receiver can be fed to acoustic terminating devices such as headphones or an exponential horn.

Quickly Erectable Antenna Support Structure

US Patent:
4404565, Sep 13, 1983
Filed:
Nov 18, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/322601
Inventors:
John W. Gurney - Reston VA
James N. Guerci - McLean VA
Clifford Allison - Oakton VA
Assignee:
Radiation Systems Incorporated - Sterling VA
International Classification:
H01Q 108
US Classification:
343881
Abstract:
A compact, foldable tripod structure is self contained and mounts an antenna reflector. The structure comprises an assemblage of structural members which are long and slender, arranged to be folded into a compact configuration for storage or transport, and adapted to be rapidly unfolded at a desired site to produce an antenna support structure having great rigidity. The geometry of the structure is designed so that most components are in tension or compression, thereby resulting in a high strength/deflection-to-weight ratio which renders the structure inherently stable. Components are permanently attached to the structure and rapid erection may be completed manually.

Photofluidic Interface

US Patent:
4512371, Apr 23, 1985
Filed:
Jun 13, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/503454
Inventors:
Tadeusz M. Drzewiecki - Silver Spring MD
Kenji Toda - Rockville MD
John Gurney - Kensington MD
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army - Washington DC
International Classification:
F15C 104
F15C 108
F15C 112
US Classification:
137828
Abstract:
A photofluidic interface that transduces optical control signals into fluid ontrol pressures is provided in which an AC modulated light source is utilized to transmit control signals to a photo acoustic cell that absorbs the light energy and converts it to heat energy thus creating pressure pulses within the cell. The output signal of the photo acoustic cell is then fluidically amplified, fluidically rectified and again fluidically amplified to create an output signal that drives an actuator.

Removable Paddle Attachment Device

US Patent:
2016006, Mar 10, 2016
Filed:
Sep 9, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/849090
Inventors:
Steven Douglas Gurney - Reston VA, US
John Wesley Gurney - Great Falls VA, US
International Classification:
F16M 13/02
A63B 67/00
F16B 2/08
A63B 43/00
B63H 16/04
B63B 35/85
Abstract:
A removable paddle attachment assembly is provided. The attachment assembly may include a attachment bracket terminating at opposing saddles, a handle saddle for engaging a first portion of a watercraft paddle and an activity saddle for engaging an activity device, whereby the activity device is removably yet rigidly secured to the watercraft paddle so that the activity device may be employed for game-playing and/or exercise-training purposes, while not impairing the performance and functionality of the watercraft paddle. The attachment bracket provides at least one attachment strap cleat so that a attachment strap may be stretched from one lateral surface of the attachment bracket to an opposing lateral surface thereof, thereby securely sandwiching the first and a second portion of the watercraft paddle against the handle saddle.
